Daly St Darwin begins at the Daly Street Bridge where the Stuart Highway ends and runs for a few hundred yards to the Esplanade overlooking the harbour.
The bridge is nothing spectacular, a simple overpass of the old railway line which ran to the wharf until 1976.
Once you cross the bridge you are in the city and continuing along
Daly St you will cross the three main streets of the Darwin CBD -
Cavenagh St, Smith St and Mitchell St.
This part of the city has been extensively rebuilt with high-rise hotel and apartment accommodation in the last few years.
There are several large sections which have obviously seen better days and are waiting for the right investor the continue the transformation of this area.
The Top End Hotel with it's shady trees is dwarfed by modern apartment
accommodation built on the Esplanade to take advantage of spectacular
harbour views.
By contrast, the 'Top End' has been a favourite
watering hole for many years, with the atmosphere of the old Darwin
located right on the edge of the city's new entertainment strip.
It's about ten minute walk from here to the Mitchell St theatre and restaurants, and a few minutes more to the Smith St Mall.
A newly built walkway connects the Bennett St end of the mall to the wave pool and wharf area, with more accommodation, restaurants, the convention centre and places of historic interest.
