Did Peter steal a yacht?

I lived and worked in Darwin - George Cres Fanny Bay and Henry St Stuart Park and at Jabiru when it was just a mining camp - 1973-74.
I met a man called Peter (cant remember his surname) who apparently had taken a 'loan' of his boss's yacht and then, unsuccessfully attempted to sail away to Timor.

I believe the boss was a car dealer and that Peter won a few hearts after Tracy by doing the right thing and helping out tirelessly in the aftermath.


Can't search the NT news via trove for that period but would LOVE to discover the details of the story as my memory of the whole drama is a bit foggy.

And what did happen to Peter ??
